Why should the devil have all the good tunes? English composer Charles Wesley (1707–88) reputedly said this. The author of over 6,500 hymns, Wesley put the words of them to popular tunes of the day to insure their popular appeal. Many of these hymns, including the famous “Hark! the Herald Angels Sing,” and “Christ, the Lord, is Risen Today,” are still great church favorites. |
