Breathalyzer. This trademarked portable device that scien- tifically measures alcohol in the blood, helping to enforce drunk driving laws, was invented by Robert F. Borkenstein (1912–2002) in 1953. Previously, he had helped invent the harder-to-use Drunkometer, among the first of such instru- ments. For his Breathalyser Borkenstein was elected by the Na- tional Safety Council in 1988 to its Safety and Health Hall of Fame International. |
