when the shit hits the fan. A common expression meaning “when big trouble breaks out.” The saying apparently derives from the old story, dating to the 1930s, about a man who hur- ried upstairs to the bathroom in a bar and found no toilet. After using a hole in the floor, he went back downstairs and found the crowded bar almost empty. “Why isn’t anybody here?” he asked. Replied the bartender: “Where were you when the shit hit the fan?” |
