rally ’round the flag, boys. Andrew Jackson is said to have coined this phrase during the Battle of New Orleans in 1812. General Jackson, or Old Hickory, as he was called, may be the inventor, but the expression only gained widespread use during the Civil War after the publication of George Root’s song “The Battle Cry of Freedom”: Rally ’round the flag, boys, Rally once again, Shouting the battle-cry of freedom. |
