词汇 | life-boat |
词源 | life-boat. The OED gives an 1801 first recorded use of this word for “a boat specially constructed for saving lives in cases of loss of a vessel at sea.” A British patent had been granted for such an unsubmergible boat in 1785, but it had not been called a life-boat. The boat was so named, according to a 1802 source quoted in the OED, “in consequence of the lives of many persons shipwrecked having been preserved by it.” In Ameri- can slang a life-boat is a pardon or commutation of a prison sentence, usually a death sentence. |
