dryasdust. Anyone termed a dryasdust, or a Dr. Dryasdust, is being called a very dry, pedantic person, the word usually ap- plied to tedious professors, historians, and authors, and always in an uncomplimentary way. The full name of this fictitious character is the Rev. Dr. Jonas Dryasdust, and Sir Walter Scott invented him to write the prefaces to some of his far from dry novels. |
