词汇 | honeydew melon |
词源 | honeydew melon. Honeydew is a popular shortening of “honeydew melon” (Cucumis Melo inodorus), a variety devel- oped around 1915 and so named because of its sweetness. Honeydew can also either be the sweet material that exudes from the leaves of certain plants in hot weather or a sugary ma- terial secreted by aphids and other insects. In either case, it gets its name from its sweetness coupled with its dewlike appear- ance. Spenser wrote of it in The Faerie Queene: Some framed faire lookes, glancing like evening lights, Others sweet words, dropping like honey dew. |
