词汇 honorificabilitudinitatibus
词源
honorificabilitudinitatibus. The making of long words was a popular game in Elizabethan England and honorificabilitudin- ity, meaning “honorableness,” was one of the most absurd ones made. Shakespeare made fun of this word by stretching it out still longer in Love’s Labour’s Lost, using its original Latin abla- tive plural when he has Costard the clown say to the servant Moth: “I marvel thy master hath not eaten thee for a word, for thou art not so long by the head as honorificabilitudinitatibus.” This is the word, incidentally, that to some “proves” Bacon was the author of all plays attributed to Shakespeare. For its rear- ranged letters form the Latin sentence Hi ludi F. Baconis nati tuiti orbi, which says, translated: “These plays born of F. Bacon, are preserved for the world.” The word, however, is found as early as 1460.
