saguaro. The giant saguaro cactus, whose common name (pronounced sa-wha-ro) is of Indian origin, has only one spe- cies and is the state flower of Arizona. The saguaro grows up to about 36 feet high and can weigh 7–8 tons. Its scientific name (Carneglia gigantean) honors American philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. The plant is valued for its fruit, often made into jams and jellies. See arizona. |
