词源 | hamster. The name for this little seven-inch-long rodent (Cricetus cricetus) derives ultimately from Middle High Ger- man or possibly from Old Saxon hamstra. Hamsters are today even more popular than guinea pigs as pets. Of the several hamster species common to Europe and Asia, the best known is the golden hamster, a gentle, docile rodent that is much val- ued for laboratory research work. The golden hamster, with its deep golden color, has the shortest gestation period of any non- marsupial mammal, females giving birth in an incredible 16 days. Just how widely this hamster has been studied by scien- tists is attested to by the 3,000 articles about it cited in the Bibli- ography of the Golden Hamster by R. Kittel (1966). The millions of golden hamsters being bred today all descend from one hamster male and three females found by a scholar, I. Aharoni, in 1930. Professor Aharoni came across a brief reference in an- cient Hebrew writings to a special kind of “Syrian mouse” ap- pearing “in Chaleb which was brought into Assyria and into the land of the Hittites.” Determining that Chaleb is today Aleppo in northern Syria, the professor traveled there from his home in what was then called Palestine and found the “Syrian mice” that have since become known to millions as golden hamsters. |
