hand in glove. To be hand-in glove with someone is to be very close indeed, as close or intimate as a glove is to a hand. We know the expression dates back to at least the late 17th cen- tury, when it was hand and glove. It wasn’t until 1891, however, that hand in glove is recorded. Jonathan Swift called hand and glove a cliché in Polite Conversation (1738). |
