词汇 | wake-up call |
词源 | wake-up call. An expression that originated in U.S. hotels about 1835, long before the telephone. At the time clerks from the front desk would knock at your door, calling you whenever you wanted to be awakened in the morning. Over the years the telephone ring replaced the knock on the door, and the expression also took on the figurative meaning of waking a person or people up from lethargy or unpreparedness. |
