Wall Street. Wall Street, which is both a street and a term symbolizing the American financial world in general, is located in downtown Manhattan at the southern end of the island and takes its name from the wall that extended along the street in Dutch times. The principal financial institutions of the city have been located there since the early 19th century. Wall Streeter, Wall Street broker, Wall Street plunger, and Wall Street shark are among terms to which the street gave birth. We find Wall Street broker first used as early as 1836, and Wall Street be- ing called The Street by 1863. |
