This expression refers in a humorous way to Christ walking on the sea, in Matthew 14:15, Mark 6:48–51, and John 6:19–21. “He thinks he can walk on water” and simi- lar phrases are usually said of someone who thinks he is divine. One time the powerful newspaper publisher Lord Beaverbrook (William Maxwell Aitken) was called upon by British states- man David Lloyd George. “Is the lord at home?” Lloyd George asked the butler. “No, sir, the lord is out walking.” “Ah,” replied Lloyd George. “On the water, I presume.” |
