walk down the aisle. Americans have been using walk down the aisle as a synonym for “getting married” for almost a century now. A bride who literally “walked down the aisle,” however, would be walking along either side of the church and might confuse everyone. The passageway the bride walks “down” to the altar is actually called the nave, though there is no chance that this will alter the expression in the slightest. |
