词源 | don’t know him from Adam. Many have observed that only a fool wouldn’t know someone from Adam, since Adam had no navel and wore only a fig leaf. But the old proverb persists. I wouldn’t know him from Adam’s off ox is possibly an attempted improvement on the original expression, off ox referring to the yoked ox farthest away from the driver—the one even less fa- miliar than the near ox, and surely less distinguishable than old Adam. |
