词源 | Diamond Jim. The nickname of the legendary James Brady (1856–1917), a millionaire speculator who rose from a bell boy to one of America’s richest men and certainly its greatest eater. The gargantuan Diamond Jim, whose postmortem revealed a stomach six times the size of a normal person, used to eat as a typical dinner: two or three dozen oysters, six or so large crabs, two bowls of turtle soup, seven or eight lobsters, two portions of turtle meat, a huge sirloin steak, assorted vegetables (for a balanced diet), a bulging platter of pastries, and a two-pound box of candy—all washed down with several gallons of orange juice (he abhorred alcohol). It was, in fact, at such a feast in New York City that Brady, bedecked with diamonds, proposed to zaftig Lillian Russell. Diamond Jim supposedly plunked an open valise containing a million dollars on the table, carefully spread out a napkin on the floor, knelt down, and promised the actress, “This is all yours if you’ll marry me.” Miss Russell sim- ply shook her head and calmly ordered more Beluga caviar. |
