dialect. Dialect is first recorded in 1577, deriving from the Latin dialectus, “way of speaking,” and is defined as “one of the varieties of a language arising from local peculiarities of vocab- ulary, pronunciation and idiom.” It is often forgotten that dia- lects sometimes become languages. Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, French, and Rumanian, for example, began life as regional dia- lects of Latin. |
