词源	collateral damage. Originally military jargon, collateral damage has become widely used since the Gulf War (1991), es- pecially in the war against terrorism (2001). It strictly means damage to a civilian area near a target by bombs or missiles that did not hit the exact target. It is now a euphemism for ci- vilian deaths caused unintentionally by these same weapons.
