词汇 | colophon |
词源 | colophon. Originally, this word, derived from the Greek ko- lophon, meaning “summit” or “finish,” was the “finishing touch” at the end of a book, a bibliographical note on the last page giv- ing the printer, date, place, and so on. Today the word has two meanings—the original one, which has been expanded to in- clude design and typographic information, and a new one, referring to the publisher’s trademark or logo, which often ap- pears on the title page of the book. The great Italian printer Aldus Manutius established the custom of the publisher’s colo- phon; his was a dolphin, symbolizing speed, and an anchor, symbolizing stability. A compulsive worker, he hung this in- scription over the door of his study: “Whoever thou art, Thou art earnestly requested by Aldus to state thy business briefly, and to take thy departure promptly . . . For this is a place of work.” See italic. |
