Buckeye State. A nickname for Ohio, after the buckeye tree (see buckeye). Like Virginia, Ohio has also been called the Mother of Presidents (Presidents Grant, Hayes, Garfield, Ben- jamin Harrison, McKinley, Taft, and Harding all hailed from Ohio). In the early 1800s Ohio was called the Yankee State be- cause so many of its settlers were from New England. |
