词汇 retiring a number
词源
retiring a number. Track competitors were the first athletes to wear numbers identifying them. Washington and Jefferson University had the first football team to do so, in 1908, and the 1929 New York Yankees were the first baseball team to adopt the practice (their numbers originally noted the player’s place in the batting order). Soon the numbers of great players were “retired” when they retired from a sport, this being among the greatest honors a player could receive. The first player to have a number retired in any sport seems to have been football’s Harold “Red” Grange, when he was at the University of Illi- nois. Grange, also known as “77” and most famously as the Galloping Ghost, later became a professional football star and a television sportscaster. Sportswriter Grantland Rice coined “Galloping Ghost” on the same weekend (October 18–19, 1920) that he coined the memorable “Four Horsemen.” See also four horsemen.
