Paris. The French still use the names Lutetia and Lutece for Paris, and though the words are considered poetic today, they actually serve to remind us that the beautiful city was once lit- tle more than a swamp. For Paris is simply a shortening of the Latin Lutetia Parisianorum, meaning “mud flats of the Parisi tribe,” the longer name not dropped until after the Roman occupation. |
