词汇 parkinson-s disease
词源
Parkinson’s disease. English surgeon and paleontologist James Parkinson (1755–1844) first described this common neurological disease in 1817, and it quickly was named after him. It is also called Paralysis agitans, shaking palsy, and par- kinsonism. PD, its popular shorthand name, generally affects people over 60, but many younger people are afflicted with the insidious disease, including those with Parkinson’s syn- drome, which commonly affects boxers. Both diseases show the same symptoms, including tremors of the hands and legs, difficulty swallowing, a shuffling gait, muscular rigidity, slow speech, and a masklike facial expression; this last called a Par- kinsonian mask. Parkinson’s is thought to be caused by the de- terioration of the brain cells that produce dopamine and can be alleviated somewhat by drugs like L-dopa. It is little known that James Parkinson was a suspect in the Popgun Plot, an at- tempt in 1794 on the life of King George III in which the king was to be assassinated by a poisoned blow dart while attend- ing the theatre. The plot failed, as did all efforts to involve Parkinson, who was even examined under oath before the Privy Council.
