retire. The etymology of this word does not paint a pretty picture of retirement. Retire comes from the Old French retirer, to draw back, and was first used in the military sense of draw- ing back; it wasn’t until the mid 17th century that we find retire used in the sense of retiring from a job. Nothing to alarm one so far, but when we look to the origins of the Old French tirer, “to draw out, endure,” we find that it probably comes from the Old French martir, “a martyr,” possibly because martyrs were often drawn out on the rack almost beyond the limits of human endurance. |
