reindeer. One might think, and many do, that reindeer are so named because they are a kind of deer which Santa Claus and others have equipped with reins so that they can pull sleds. But the word reindeer has nothing to do with reins. The first part of the word is simply a borrowing of a Scandinavian word for the “creature,” which derives ultimately from the Old Icelandic word hreinn. Deer derives from the Old English deor for beast or animal. |
