reichstag; Third Reich. Reichstag is German for parliament. Ernest Weekley, in An Etymological Dictionary of Modern En- glish, quotes a historian who regards Prussian minister Otto von Bismarck as “a man of infinite humor, who called his hound Reichstag.” Third Reich refers to Germany under the rule of the Nazis, 1933–45, one of the most vicious regimes in history. The term was coined by Arthur Moeller von der Bruck in his book Das Dritte Reich (The Third Empire, 1923). |
