raise cain. Raising cain, “to cause much trouble or a loud dis- turbance,” is probably a synonym for “to raise the devil,” for whom the biblical Cain was an early euphemism. The first re- corded use of the expression, in a joke printed in the St. Louis Pennant in 1840, shows that it was well-known at the time: “Why have we every reason to believe that Adam and Eve were both rowdies? Because . . . they both raised Cain.” |
