ragamuffin. Until recently ragamuffin for a shabby, dirty child was thought to derive from the name of a demon in the 14th-century allegorical poem Piers Plowman. Recent research, however, has found that the word was used as a real person’s last name before this and probably derives ultimately from the Middle English raggi, ragged, and the Middle Dutch muffe, mitten. |
