cynosure. Someone or something at the center of attention, such as a beautiful woman (“She was the cynosure of all eyes”). Cynosure derives from kunosoura, “dog’s tail,” the name the ancient Greeks gave to the constellation Ursa Minor, whose tail contains the North Star. Since navigators from earliest times used the North Star to guide them and were constantly observing it, cynosure came to mean anything that attracts attention. |
