home run. The term home run in baseball was first recorded in 1856 and, as Stuart Berg Flexner pointed out in Listening to America, it “couldn’t have appeared much sooner because it wasn’t until the late 1840s and early 50s that home was used in games to mean the place one tried to reach in order to win or score . . .” A home run was also called a home at the time, but homer isn’t recorded until 1891. It should be noted that home run was a cricket term before it was used in baseball. Because it is the ultimate hit in baseball, a home run has come to mean a great accomplishment in any field. |
