Cutty means anything short in Scottish En- glish, a short person, a short-tempered person, etc. Cutty Sark is the name of a famous 19th century British tea clipper that took its name from Robert Burns’s poem “Tam O’Shanter,” in which a young witch wearing only a “cutty sark” (a short shift or nightgown) chases a Scottish farmer.
