An Americanism coined about 1830 that means “knowledge of how to do something, expertise.” It was first re- corded in an 1859 issue of Spirit of the Times featuring a story in which one character tells another to charge “fifty cents for the killing” (of livestock) “and fifty cents for the know-how.”
