tsunami. Tsunami means “storm wave” in Japanese. Tsunami (soo-nam-ee) waves have killed tens of thousands. Starting as the result of an undersea volcanic eruption or earthquake, tsu- namis gather force and can travel at over 400 miles an hour, ris- ing to heights of over 100 feet before they crash into shore. Tsu- namis have been traced back almost to the beginning of re- corded history, but the word itself did not come into English until the 20th century. See splash. |
