quicksand. Quicksand, first recorded in 1275, may not be so named because it quickly sucks down anyone stepping on it. In fact, people caught in the treacherous sands can last for hours if they don’t panic. Quick action may account for its name, but quicksand could just as well derive from the “lively” meaning of quick, because the loose wet sand shifts in its place as if it were alive. It is dangerous because it yields easily to any presence upon it. |
