costermonger. An old rare British term familiar to Ameri- cans through their reading. Costermonger means a pushcart vendor of fruits and vegetables, but was originally, in the 16th century, an apple-seller, hawking large ribbed cooking apples called castards that are not grown today. Monger means a trader or dealer, deriving from the Old English mangian, to trade. To- day supermarkets are far more common than costermongers in Britain. |
