coulomb. Charles-Augustin de Coulomb (1736–1806), a French military engineer who became a physicist when bad health forced his retirement from the army, did much work on electricity and magnetism. He designed his torsion balance for measuring the force of magnetic and electric attraction in 1777, while still an army engineer, but didn’t publish his findings un- til about 10 years later, finding that Michell had invented the same system independently. Bearing his name are Coulomb’s law of magnetism; the coulomb, a unit for measuring the quan- tity of an electrical current; and the coulometer, which is more often called a voltameter. See volt.
