couch potato. A phrase from a pun. Couch potato means a lazy, inactive person who does little else in leisiure time save lie on the couch watching TV. As for the punning derivation of couch potato, first came the slang term boob tube for television, recorded in 1963. Someone who watched too much of the boob tube was shortly after dubbed a “boob-tuber.” Boob tuber sug- gested the potato, a plant tuber, to Tom Iacino of Pasadena, California, in 1976, and he invented the term couch potato, which he registered as a trademark eight years later. Soon after his inventive punning, Iacino and some friends formed a club called the Couch Potatoes, which appeared in the 1979 Pasade- na Doo Dah Parade, in which they lay on couches watching TV while their float was pulled through the streets. Little remained but for cartoonist Robert Armstrong to draw the familiar im- age of a couch potato—a potato sprawled out on a couch watching TV—for his book Dr. Spudd’s Etiquette for the Couch Potato (1982).
