词汇 | digital film restoration |
词源 | digital film restoration. By one estimate, almost half the movies made before 1950 have been lost because they were improperly stored, and many more have deteriorated to some degree. Digital film restoration can do nothing about the former films but can vastly improve those that are flawed. The process involves converting each frame of a movie into a dig- ital image, which is then displayed on a computer screen and repaired by an artist using a digital pen and tablet; the re- paired frame is finally recorded back onto the film. The pro- cess can also be used to correct mistakes made in the original filming; for example, the artists restoring Walt Disney’s Fanta- sia added an animal’s foot missing in the original, and director George Lucas added new creatures to scenes of the Star Wars trilogy. “With digital, if you can think it, you can do it,” one restoration expert says. “If you want to take Humphrey Bogart out and put Brad Pitt in you can do it.” Entire pictures can be virtually made over. The biggest, if not the only, problem in this complicated process is the $1 million to $5 million it costs to digitally restore a film. |
