diesel. German mechanical engineer Dr. Rudolph Diesel de- veloped the heavy-duty internal combustion engine bearing his name from 1892–97 at the Krupp factory in Essen and spent the rest of his life perfecting it and manufacturing diesel engines at a factory he founded in Augsburg. Today it is em- ployed in locomotives, ships, generators, cars, trucks, subma- rines, and much heavy equipment. Diesel became rich and fa- mous as a result of his invention, yet he may have ended a sui- cide in 1913, when he was only 55. It is possible that he fell overboard while crossing the English Channel on a mail steam- er on the night of September 30, but his hat and overcoat were found by the rail, suggesting that he had jumped.
