Turveydropian. An eponymous word, little used today, that remembers Dickens’s character Mr. Turveydrop in Bleak House (1852–53). Mr. Turveydrop considers himself “a perfect model, a past master of deportment,” Dickens writes. He is in reality a selfish widower, “a fat old gentleman with a false complexion, false teeth, false whiskers, and a wig.” He considers himself “one of the aristocracy” and has worked his devoted wife to death at his Dancing Academy. As for his son, he has had him christened Prince in honor of the Prince Regent, even though Prince sounds like a dog’s name. While he has the best of eve- rything, his son has nothing.
