词汇 | turn up one-s nose |
词源 | turn up one’s nose. Turn up one’s nose means “to show con- tempt or disdain.” Lord Byron may have coined this phrase in Don Juan (1819), writing of “Antonia . . . turning up her nose, with looks abused her master.” But a century or so earlier, hold up one’s nose had been recorded as meaning “to be proud and haughty.” |
