词汇 | pearls before swine |
词源 | pearls before swine. This famous modern-day quip wouldn’t have been possible without a biblical injunction over four centuries ago. One version of the origin of this quip has Clare Boothe Brokow, who later became Clare Boothe Luce, encountering Dorothy Parker in the lobby of Vanity Fair headquarters one morning. “Age before beauty,” said the sharp-tongued Clare, holding the door open. “Pearls before swine,” said the sharper-tongued Mrs. Parker, entering first. Luce later denied this story, and a similar quip was used in one of Alexander Woollcott’s pieces, but it has nevertheless become part of the Parker legend. It may be true, though. Re- called Mrs. Robert Benchley when she was 80 years old: “I was right there, the time in the Algonquin [hotel] when some little chorus girl and Dottie were going into the dining room and the girl stepped back and said, ‘Age before beauty,’ and Dottie said very quickly, ‘Pearls before swine.’ I was right there when she said it.” |
