Peacemaker. Swedish engineer John Ericsson was responsible for the first screw propeller warship, the Princeton, which em- bodied his ideas when built at the Philadelphia Navy Yard in 1843. A year later, another of Ericsson’s ideas was incorporated in a big gun for the Princeton. It was called the Peacemaker, and its breech was strengthened with wrought iron. However, the Peacemaker, unlike the screw propeller, became one of the most famous guns in U.S. naval history because it was a failure. In February 1844 President John Tyler and some 200 promi- nent guests took a cruise down the Potomac aboard the Prince- ton to witness the highly touted gun being tested. When it was fired, the Princeton exploded its breech, killing the secretary of state, the secretary of the navy, and three others. President Tyler escaped only because he was dining below decks with his fiancée.
