词源	crossing the Rubicon. The Rubicon, a river in Italy, marked the boundary between Roman Italy and Gaul, which was governed by Julius Caesar. When Caesar crossed the Rubicon in 49 b.c. he had invaded the Roman Republic and there was no going back. Thus the expression crossing the Rubicon be- came synonymous over the years with “taking an irreversible step.”
