termite (n.)

1849年，由复数形式 termites （1781年）反构词而来，源自现代拉丁语的 termites（三音节），源自 termes （所有格 termitis ）的复数形式，Late Latin 的一个特殊用处是 “木虫，白蚁”，通过拉丁语 terere 的影响转变而来，其意思是“摩擦，磨损，侵蚀”，比之前的拉丁语 tarmes. 更早。它们的巢是 terminarium（1863）。在英语中之前被称为 wood ant 或 white ant。
