all I know is what I read in the papers. This saying has be- come a popular American expression since Oklahoman Will Rogers coined it in his Letters of a Self-Made Diplomat to His President (1927). It has various applications but is commonly used to mean “I’m not an expert, just an ordinary person, and what I’ve told you is true to the best of my knowledge.” It implies one may be wrong because one’s sources are not infallible. |
