January. Because it was the gateway of the new year, January was named for the Roman god Janus, keeper of the gates of heaven, who had two faces, one at the back to look at the old year and one at the front to view the new year. The Roman Jan- uarius became Januarie in English and then January. Janus is also remembered in the word “Janus-faced,” for “a two-faced person,” a deceiver or double-dealer. |
