词汇 chili pepper
词源
chili pepper. The pungent pods of Capsicum annuum longum and several other species are named after the Nahuatl chilli, meaning the same. Chilli, in turn, derives from a Nahuatl word meaning “sharp” or “pointed,” because it is so pungent or biting to the tongue. Both “hot” and “sweet” varieties of garden pep- pers belong to the Capsicum genus native to tropical America. They are no relation to the condiment pepper, which is made from the berries of a climbing shrub of the Piper genus. Hottest of the hot chili peppers is the habanero variety, which is said to cause slight, temporary deafness—so you don’t hear your screams when you eat them, some people believe. See also cayenne pepper; pepper.
