chickenweed. This name is given to common ragwort, a bane of gardeners, because its seed used to be mixed with chicken feed as a remedy for various maladies of chickens. Other plants named after chickens include the “chicken grape” of the South, valued for its fragrance, the common “hen and chicks” and “chicken on the wing” (the fringed polygala), so called because of the shape of its flower. |
